E’ arrivato il due Febbraio e come ogni anno ci si scervella su come festeggiare in maniera diversa e originale il compleanno di Gemma in Gemma Arterton Italia. Oggi mi rendo conto di non aver mai parlato di come, quando e perché sia nata la mia passione nei suoi confronti, tanto da diventare la mia attrice preferita inglese. Perché non farlo proprio oggi, celebrando il suo grande talento poliedrico? Un’artista che, anno dopo anno, si è messa sulla strada che preferiva e che sentiva meglio per lei con grande coraggio, onestà e determinazione.
Come ho scoperto Gemma Arterton?

Tutto è iniziato tredici anni fa con Quantum of Solace. Avevo adorato Casino Royale e appena uscì nel 2008 questo secondo capitolo di 007 con Daniel Craig mi fiondai subito a vederlo. Il film non mi colpì particolarmente a eccezione di una ragazza praticamente sconosciuta che interpretava l’agente Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton. Appena mise piede in scena rimasi catturato dal suo carisma, un’attrice che sembrava venire da un’altra epoca: spiritosa, grintosa, sensuale, elegantissima. Una vera delusione quando la vidi morire dopo cinque minuti. Che spreco di talento, che peccato!
Nel corso degli anni l’ho trovata con grande piacere in RocknRolla e I Love Radio Rock ed era incredibile come lasciasse la sua impronta anche in ruoli così piccoli, caratteristica da grande attrice. Chiara la provenienza teatrale dove viene insegnato che Non esistono piccoli ruoli, esistono piccoli attori. Fantastico il lavoro sul personaggio, un’artista che ha sempre tirato fuori il meglio dal personaggio anche se non offriva molto corpo a livello di script.
Questa passione si è consolidata ancora di più nel Maggio 2010 quando andai a vedere, nel giorno del mio compleanno, Prince of Persia e rimasi ancora più conquistato dal suo talento, finalmente in ruolo da protagonista femminile. Una bellezza sconvolgente, ma prima di tutto un talento sconfinato completamente a suo agio nella commedia, nel dramma e nell’azione. In un periodo dove a Hollywood si vedevano attrici che portavano principalmente bellezza e poi talento – se fosse – lei faceva l’opposto.
Tutto questo amore nei suoi confronti è stato consacrato nel meraviglioso Tamara Drewe, una delle mie commedie preferite, una di quelle che posso definire tranquillamente capolavoro, una di quelle che so praticamente a memoria in cui rido e mi emoziono ogni volta come la prima volta.
Com’è nata Gemma Arterton Italia?

Esattamente il giorno dopo in cui vidi Hansel & Gretel – Cacciatori di Streghe al cinema. In pieno boom di creazione di fanpage su Facebook dedicata ad attrici e attori, decisi di aprire Gemma Arterton Italia per celebrare questo immenso talento che mi catturava ogni volta, indipendentemente dal genere. Dalla creazione della pagina questa passione è andata a crescere, ancora di più, ed ero sicuro che avrebbe preso la sua strada più congeniale scegliendo ruoli che risaltassero il suo talento e che non andassero contro la sua onestà intellettuale e artistica. E’ stata una delle prime a parlare, coraggiosamente, dello sporco di Hollywood, di femminismo scegliendo il cinema indipendente e il teatro ai blockbuster. Da eterno sostenitore dei diritti e da artista sono contentissimo che abbia scelto, in seguito, tutti progetti coraggiosi e vari regalando gigantesche performance anche sui palcoscenici londinesi.

Chi l’avrebbe mai detto, aprendo Gemma Arterton Italia, che l’anno dopo avrei incontrato Gemma a Londra? Nell’autunno 2014 andai a vedere Made in Dagenham – The Musical. Sotto consiglio di un’amica le feci trovare in camerino un mazzo di fiori con una lettera che parlava di me, della mia passione per lei e di Gemma Arterton Italia. Poi iniziò lo spettacolo: la prima mezz’ora rimasi con gli occhi sbarrati, incredulo di assistere alla performance della mia attrice preferita dal vivo, colpito positivamente dal suo talento vocale (sono un cantante lirico, quindi tendo a iper analizzare ogni volte che ascolto). Non voglio risultare prolisso quindi leggete qui il racconto completo dell’incontro. Pazzesco vederla, a un passo da me, alla stage door e poterla salutare, facendomi una foto.
Nel 2016 andai a vedere Nell Gwynn. Una serata piovosa e la paura che Gemma non si fermasse alla stage door, che ansia! Anche questa volta le feci recapitare i fiori con la lettera – fare tutto questo in mezzo al diluvio fu tra il tragico e il comico – e lo spettacolo fu magnifico. Vedere Gemma entrare dalla platea è stata una sorpresa e ci regalò una performance magnifica, giustamente candidata agli Olivier Awards ovvero gli Oscar del teatro inglese.
Poco da dire, poco da fare: il palcoscenico è la sua casa prediletta e come si esprime lì sopra non succede altrove. Ciliegina sulla torta è stato l’incontro alla stage door quando uscì con i miei fiori e mi riconobbe all’istante. Parlammo qualche minuto, la penna si bagnò e non si scriveva bene, ma lei si incaponì fino a quando non riuscì a farmi per bene l’autografo nel libro di sala dello spettacolo. Che non ci facciamo mancare un’altra foto?
Il terzo incontro, che ho raccontato fino allo sfinimento – più che altro per chi legge – è avvenuto a Gennaio 2017 con lo spettacolare Saint Joan. Ho sempre amato il personaggio di Giovanna D’Arco e vedere Gemma interpretarla in un testo famosissimo per la sua difficoltà è stata un’emozione che non si può spiegare. Ho pianto a dirotto in più volte e facevo fatica a smettere al punto che quando uscì dal teatro stavo ancora con i lacrimoni. Lì la serata si completò nel migliore di modi parlando per diversi minuti come amici e colleghi. Non mi dilungo, quindi andate qui per leggere i dettagli.

Gemma Arterton prima di essere una grande attrice, è una persona meravigliosa. Un mio punto di riferimento come artista ed essere umano. Incredibile, poi, che scelga sempre progetti che mi interessano molto e che tratti sempre tematiche che mi stanno a cuore come la violenza domestica in Safer at Home e le ingiustizie subite da una ragazzina Down nei secoli passati nel prossimo corto The Cunning (contentissimo di aver contribuito alla raccolta fondi). Interpreterà anche la mia cantante preferita Dusty Springfield (ho tutta la sua discografia) ed è nel nuovo film di Kingsman, il mio franchise preferito.
Una donna che ha rischiato scegliendo la strada più difficile, ma che è riuscita a realizzarsi alla grande diventando un’artista molto amata e stimata in patria, e non solo. Augurandole tutto il bene in questo Mondo, non mi resta che ringraziare Gemma per la sua arte augurandole un bellissimo compleanno!

It all started thirteen years ago with Quantum of Solace. I had loved Casino Royale and as soon as this second chapter of 007 with Daniel Craig came out in 2008 I immediately jumped in to see it. The film didn’t particularly impress me except for a virtually unknown girl who played agent Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton. As soon as she set foot on stage I was captivated by her charisma, an actress who seemed to come from another era: witty, spirited, sensual, very elegant. A real disappointment when I saw her die after five minutes. What a waste of talent, what a pity!
Over the years I have found her with great pleasure in RocknRolla and The Boat That Rocked and it was amazing how she left her mark even in such small roles, the characteristic of a great actress. The theatrical provenance is clear where it is taught that there are no small roles, there are small actors. Fantastic work on the character, an artist who always brought out the best in the character even if she wasn’t offered much at script level.
This passion was consolidated even more in May 2010 when I went to see, on my birthday, Prince of Persia and I was even more conquered by her talent, finally in the role of female main star. A shocking beauty, but first of all a boundless talent completely at ease in comedy, drama and action. At a time when in Hollywood you could see actresses who brought mainly beauty and then talent – if so – she did the opposite.
All this love for her has been consecrated in the wonderful Tamara Drewe, one of my favorite comedies, one of those that I can easily define a masterpiece, one of those that I know practically by heart in which I laugh and get excited every time like the first time .

Exactly the day after I saw Hansel & Gretel – Witch Hunters at the cinema. In full boom in creating fan pages on Facebook dedicated to actresses and actors, I decided to open Gemma Arterton Italia to celebrate this immense talent that captured me every time, regardless of kind of movies. Since the creation of the page this passion has grown, even more, and I was sure that she would have taken the most congenial path of her by choosing roles that would highlight her talent and that her intellectual and artistic honesty did not go against her. She was one of the first to speak, bravely, of Hollywood’s filth, of feminism, choosing independent cinema and theater rather than blockbusters. As an eternal supporter of rights and as an artist, I am delighted that she has subsequently chosen all courageous and varied projects, giving gigantic performances even on the London stages.

Who would have thought, opening Gemma Arterton Italia, that I would meet Gemma in London the following year? In the fall of 2014 I went to see Made in Dagenham – The Musical. On the advice of a friend, I had her find a bouquet of flowers in the dressing room with a letter that spoke of me, my passion for her and Gemma Arterton Italia. Then the show began: the first half hour I was staring, incredulous to see the performance of my favorite actress live, positively impressed by her vocal talent (I’m an opera singer, so I tend to over analyze every time I listen to a voice) . I don’t want to be verbose so read here the full story of the meeting. Crazy to see her, one step away from me, at the stage door and be able to say hello, taking a picture of me.
In 2016 I went to see Nell Gwynn. A rainy evening and the fear that Gemma would not stop at the stage door, what anxiety! Once again I had the flowers delivered to her with the letter – doing all this in the midst of the flood was between the tragic and the comic – and the spectacle was magnificent. Seeing Gemma enter the audience was a surprise and she gave us a magnificent performance, rightly nominated for the Olivier Awards.
Little to say, little to do: the stage is her favorite home and how it is expressed up there does not happen elsewhere. The icing on the cake was the meeting at the stage door when she went out with my flowers and she recognized me instantly. We talked for a few minutes, the pen got wet and did not write well, but she pouched herself until she managed to get my autograph right on the program. That we do not miss another photo?
The third meeting, which I told to the point of exhaustion – mostly for the reader – took place in January 2017 with the spectacular Saint Joan. I have always loved the character of Joan of Arc and seeing Gemma interpret her in a very famous text for her difficulty was an emotion that cannot be explained. I cried out several times and I was struggling to stop to the point that when she left the theater I was still with tears. Gemma Arterton before being a great actress, she is a wonderful person. My point of reference as an artist and human being. Incredible, then, that he always chooses projects that interest me very much and that he always deals with themes that are close to my heart such as domestic violence in Safer at Home and the injustices suffered by a girl with Down syndrome in the past centuries in the next short The Cunning (very happy to have contributed to fundraising). She will also play my favorite singer Dusty Springfield (I have her entire discography) and is in the new Kingsman movie, my favorite franchise.
